"news4 today" continues at 5:00 a.m. the party just beginning in charmed city after the ravens fans celebrate their team's big win in the super bowl. good morning everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. welcome to "news4 today" for this monday, february 4th, 2013. baltimore's big win isn't the only thing you'll be buzzing about around the water cooler today. a lot of people are wondering what's to blame for the power outage that left the superdome in the dark. what we're about learning about the incident ahead. >> are you sick of the snow, sick of not enough snow? either way, you won't have to think about that this morning. there is another wave of wintry weather not far move. tom kierein here with what you

need before you go. >> a few of the flurries flying through the air yesterday and gently falling in some areas. the sky has cleared out. the mountains of western maryland, east of there it's mostly clear. under this clear sky, it's a cold morning. a lot of that snowmelted as we got about freezing. back down to the mid-20s in prince george's county. mid and upper 20s, fairfax and arlington counties. farther south and west, loudoun county to fauquier, prince william, stafford, spotsylvania, the low 20s there. much of southern maryland, anne arundel generally in the upper 20s. through the morning hours, we'll be holding steady below freezing. mid-20s through 8:00 a.m. increasing clouds by 9:00 a.m. around 30 degrees. the sunset at 5:33. i'll talk about that potential for snow later tonight. how much may we get and where. i'll have details on that in ten minutes. now a look at your first 4

traffic with danella on this monday morning. good morning. >> good morning. thanks, tom. traveling in the district, checking for incidents. no incidents, nothing reported right now. especially accidents looking out for you guys traveling in the district. nice and clear. shoot over to gw parkway in both directions and getting to the beltway. no issues there either. along the dulles toll road, a live look now along the greenway. passing 28. sully road towards the beltway in both directions. your volume light. over to the rails. they're open, no reported delays. eun, over to you. >> danella, thank you. >> the party is still going strong had morning in baltimore as the city celebrates the ravens super bowl title. the ravens beat the san francisco 49ers, 34-31 last night. we expect the ravens to return to baltimore sometime today. the team will celebrate with it fans during a parade through the

city tomorrow. the ravens appeared to have the game in hand early in the third quarter. they led 28-6 before the 49ers staged a dramatic comeback. they trailed by five point with a chance to take the lead in the final 2:00 of the game but couldn't store the go-ahead touchdown even though they were deep in ravens territory. after the game, coach john harbaugh commended the 49ers and praised their head coach who happens to be his younger brother jim. there's no greater competitor, there's no greater coach in the national football league or in the world as far as i'm concerned than jim harbaugh. the way that team played proves it. >> this is the ravens second super bowl title. their first came after the 2000-20001 season. the power company in new orleans blames sensing equipment for one of the strangest moments of the night. electricity at the superdome suddenly went out in the third quarter delaying the game for more than half an hour. the utility company which provides power to the dome says

a piece of equipment which monitors electricity sensed an abnormality in it system and opened a breaker that caused the lights to go out. john harbaugh was particularly upset about the outage. his team had just scored a touchdown to take a 22-point lead when it happened. it killed the ravens momentum. the game self-is one of the things you'll be talking about today. some made you laugh, others may have left you in tears. in about 20 minutes, we'll look at the super bowl commercials that will have you talking today. a bus crash killed at least eight people, injured more than a dozen others in southern california. the bus was carrying a tour group from mexico when the bus driver reported brake problems in big bear resort area. the bus rear ended a sedan and hit a pickup truck that was pulling a trailer. 38 people were taken to the hospital. today president obama takes his push for gun control legislation on the road. he'll sit down with law enforcement leaders in minneapolis. many of the officers handled a

deadly workplace shooting last september. five people were killed there. the president's meeting will be a few blocks from where a 5-year-old boy as shot and killed in a gang dispute last summer. one out of ten people in the state of minnesota has a firearms hunting license. gun violence will be the subject of a forum had morning at the university of maryland. state attorney general will host that meeting discussing how to curb gun violence. angela also brooks and police chief tom manger are is et to speak at the event. we expect to learn more about young people in the district and their struggles thanks to the group, raise d.c. the group released some of the numbers already. six in ten students graduate high school in four years. 42% of them are employed full-time. 10,000 low income youths between 16 and 24 don't have a job and aren't in school. raise d.c. includes school's chancellor kaya henderson and leaders from the business sector and other organizations.

nationwide wi-fi could soon be reality. the federal communications commission is considering creating a free wi-fi network across the country. they say it would allow schools and businesses to lower costs and could also help people who can't afford high cell phone or internet bells. wireless carriers are working furiously to block the plan. they say it could interfere with

a 5-year-old boy has been held for nearly 200 hours in alabama after being taken by a gunman from his school bus. jimmy lee dykes is the man at the center of this standoff. the veteran is described as a loner who did not trust the government. the man is held up in an underground bunker with the boy. police are in communication with the two. they have delivered food, toys and medicine for the little boy. >> as this standoff drags on, charles poland jr. was remembered as a hero during his

funeral yesterday. 20 other children were on the bus at the time of his death. the 66-year-old was praised for his character and his devotion to the children in his community. police in texas are still working to figure out were an iraq war veteran shot and killed a former navy seal over the weekend. the u.s. military confirmed eddie ralph served in the marines from 2006 to 2010 and is currently on reserve duty. he's accused of killing 38-year-old chris kyle and another man at a texas gun range saturday night. police believe ralph was unemploy and possibly mentally unstable snooimts my understanding that the suspect may have been suffering from some type of mental illness from being in the military himself. he was a marine for four years. and he may have been suffering from some complications from that. >> kyle was the most lethal sniper in american military history with 160 confirmed kills during his ten years in the u.s. navy. we go to mexico now.

developments there as officials confirm that 36 people are dead after an explosion at an oil company headquarters there. the attorney general in mexico says it's still too early to determine whether that blast was due to an attack, an accident or negligence. results from an investigation expected any day now. the panex building is the second largest skyscraper there. police say 28 people have been released from the hospital after their charter bus hit an overpass in boston. seven people still in the hospital, one in rit cal condition. authorities say the bus was not supposed to be on the road. it had a ten-foot height limit. the bus was holding a group of students from philadelphia in town to tour the campus of harvard. the bus driver was looking at his gps when he hit the bridge. no formal charges have been filed. president obama says the boy scouts of america should reverse its long-standing ban on home sex sexual members. the president said the scouts provide leadership training and "no one should be barred from that."

. the national executive board is expected to discuss the issue this week. last week they were open to overturning the ban with a policy to allow local sponsors make their own decisions on the issue. happening today, a huge honor for former new york city mayor ed koch. starting today the east 77th and lexington station will be called mayor ed koch subway station. koch died of congestive heart failure last friday. he was 88 years old. his funeral will be held today. the family of muhammad ali is denying reports that he's in failing health and near death. a british tabloid reported the legendary boxer was close to dying. then the rumors started circulating on the internet. his wife released this photo of him in his ravens gear. he didn't blink at all during beyonce's halftime performance. turns out what time you eat does matter.

a new study shows people who eat their biggest meal of the day in the morning lose more weight. researchers followed europeans whose main meal of the day lunch. those who ate a large meal before 3:00 p.m. lost more weight and a lower risk of diabetes. doctors warn, it's too soon to trade in your scale for your watch. >> if you food deprive yourself for five, six, seven hours, let's say eat lunch at 3:00 versus 1:00 x you'll be a lot hungrier at 3:00. much more likely to overeat. >> the truth stands. if you eat too much and move too little, you will gain weight. no matter what. >> if you eat three chocolate croissants for breakfast, that's not good either. >> not good for you. >> i'm indliend do that. but i'm just saying. >> all things in moderation. >> of course. >> let's get a look at our forecast. we've had snow so often. it comes out snow. >> seems like almost every day.

>> ravens pans in baltimore ready to welcome their team back to town. this was the scene in the federal hill neighborhood last night. take a look at that. thousands of fans poured into the streets after the game. police haven't said whether there were any arrests. but we are getting reports of damage to cars in that area. most of the fans, though, seemed happy to celebrate this win without getting violent. >> thank you, ravens! yeah! all the way! >> it's awesome, man. ravens. go flacco. we had such a hard time finding excited people. >> they're not excited in baltimore at all. >> police were prepared for the celebration. they called in extra officers. all in all, it was good. >> there will be a more formal celebration in baltimore tomorrow. the city will host a super bowl parade. we're still working on getting details about the event. we can tell that you it will start at 11:300 a.m.

a prince george's county firefighter is recovering in the hospital this morning after being injured fighting a fire in bowie. it happened at the home on kingsfield lane. a neighbor called 9-1-1 after someone knocked on his door to warn him about the fire spreading. >> someone knocked on our toor. i do not know who it was. they seemed panicked. they said our neighbor's house was on fire. we ran out and saw that the left portion of our house was engulfed in flames. >> no one was inside the home at the time of the fire much the firefighter was burned on his back. he is expected to be okay. no word on the cause of the fire. today, virginia lawmakers will push for harsher

punishments for drivers who text behind the wheel. they'll consider a bill increasing the fine for texting and driving to $250 for a first offense and it makes it a primary offense. police can stop you solely for texting. right now an officer can only cite a driver for texting if they're committing another offense, like speeding. the house will vote on the measure tomorrow. the future of virginia's new budget is a bit uncertain. yesterday, house and senate committees approved a variety of measures including a 3% pay raise for state employees, educators and officers. it addresses school security measures and numerous other benefits. lawmakers are at a stalemate over medicaid under the new affordable care act. many say a loan could delay the passing of the budget. posing the threat of a government shutdown. chancellor michelle reid releases a new book called radical. you'll remember her controversial tenure with the district. she close 23 schools and fired
